When I heard that the ACT was going to be culling its kangaroos, I was absolutely horrified. I might be an animal-loving hippy, but I doubt that any right-minded civic person would condone such cruelty.
So the ‘roos were first shot with tranquillising darts in the enclosures where they were trapped? So what? When the culling started, the ‘roos were freaking out and smashing themselves into the wire fences! That could not be described as “humane” and “painless”.
Some of them had joeys in their pouches, for goodness sake. Wouldn’t humans do anything to have their young spared? Would Dads willingly allow their daughters be shot? Would Mothers willingly allow their sons be shot? No. And you know it. You would do anything to prevent your offspring from having their lives shortened, just like these adult kangaroos were doing. They may be “animals”, therefore “dumb”, but they are still living, breathing, emotional beings. They behave just like humans do — keeping their young ones alive, if not themselves.
As one person said in the news, “They call it a cull. Why don’t they call it a slaughter? Why don’t they call it by its real name?”
Yeah, why don’t they?
And the other question that must be asked, how did the ‘rooscome to be so sick, starved and a pest? THIS IS THEIR NATURAL HABITAT! Just because a couple handful of humans don’t want to be inconvenienced is just ridiculous. This Earth was not created or made or evolved for human selfishness, it was created/made/evolved for all living beings, kangaroos and humans and whoever and whatever else. Deal with it, humans, without resorting to your cruel “let’s kill ‘em all” mentality. And by the way, ACT acting conservator Russell Watkinsonhas admitted that the kangaroos weren’t starving “yet” but the ACT Government wanted to go ahead and slaughter them anyway.
This massive slaughter will not solve anything, and it will only temporarily reduce the population whilst involving horrendous cruelty. As for the figure that there are 3,000 kangaroos in the ACT, this is an unsubstantiated figure. Dodgy figures, indeed. PLUS it is likely there will be rain this year, thus food for the ‘roos, and they won’t be starving — but we will never know that if this slaughter goes ahead, which as last check, it has already started.
SHAMEFUL and INHUMANE. Shame on you, ACT. You deserve your world-wide reputation for animal cruelty.
